Well, I've only read bits and pieces of the Leroux book, but I have to say I thought the scene where Raoul stood just outside of her dressing room while she spoke to the Phantom to be completely bittersweet- which I loooove.
Anyone else feel this way?
It's kind of heart-wrenching, because he wanted to say hi to her after all those years, and there she is, speaking to some mysterious other man. Calling him master and "i only sing for you" etc etc... but yet it was sweet in how Raoul felt so compelled to say hi to her.

Aww! I've only read the first few pages of the book (via the Internet) and I desperately want to read the rest ... This sounds just so gorgeous - bittersweet, as you said. You really make me want to read on ... (::cough actually get around to buying a copy cough: It reminds me a little of what Raoul must have felt like in the musical during 'The Mirror' ... when he says "Whose is that voice? Who is that in there?" You just feel so bad for him - just meeting up with his childhood sweetheart and then hearing her pretty much give her soul to another guy

I haven't read Kay's version, but I love the way Leroux portrays Raoul, he just seems so young and passionate to Christine then especially when Raoul was standing outside her dressing room. *sigh* That's when I would wish I was Christine.
