I'd have to say Leroux!Christine is definitely my most preferred and adored version of Christine. So I just have to ask: what are our thoughts on her?
I think that she is one of the most mature versions of Christine (however that doesn't really keep her from having her naive moments), which is great... but I guess that I cannot exactly pinpoint *why* I love Leroux's Christine trillions. I'd suggest that perhaps her delicacy and perfectionism and flawlessness, and also that she's simply perfect for dear Raoul make her a very loveable character.

Thank you, The Black Domino. Leroux's Christine is the absolute best (tho' I love all the characters better in Leroux with some exceptions). One of the things I love foremost about Christine in Leroux is her AGE, goshdarnit. I don't know why people got this idea that Christine is a stupid air-headed whiney little 16-year old girl (*cough*kay*ugh*cough* ) I like the fact that she is older in Leroux. So, she's only like, 20 or 21, but hey, 4-5 years can make a big difference. I'm not an E/C shipper in any sense, not even partially, but an older Christine does make her relationship with Erik seem less perverted, if you catch my drift. XD Also, being older, she is more mature and though her logic may be outrageously flawed at times, it is obvious that she is pretty intellegent. She may act ridiculous and blow smoke in Raoul's face and piss me off at times, but she has so many redeeming qualities that I often tend to forget that...^_^;; I've noticed that many phans despise Leroux!Christine. I can only wonder why...?

I did really like Leroux's Christine. Why? She's blonde! ... Okay, I have better reasons than that, although I do think that blonde suits her I totally agree about the age issue, Hi-chan. Firstly, it would be pretty near impossible for a sixteen-year-old to have a developed enough voice to sing the roles that she does, but also it does give her a bit more credibility; she's an adult, not a kid. (Although I always worked out that the Leroux age gap was bigger than the ALW one, but we won't go there.) I admit when I read Leroux for the first time, I thought Christine was a nasty little b*tch to Raoul at times at first (pardon my French), but as I read on, I thought it made her character much more complex and sympathisable (if that's a word) to understand why she pushed him away ... having pretty much sworn to keep herself for Erik made her confliction that much more believable and heart-wrenching at times ::pokes quote in siggy:: Finally, she gets a much cooler ending. Scorpions, grasshoppers and torture chambers beat ALW any day Although I do love ALW!Christine, too, Leroux!Christine kicks her butt in terms of common sense and generally being, well, gutsier. I only have one other phriend who's read Leroux ... and although she doesn't hate Christine, she does like poking fun at her over her suicide attempt. Aie. Honestly, though, I still can't really find much reason to hate her. She's annoying at times, but so is ALW!Christine. I should write a pros and cons list.

Although I haven't finished the book ( I did read a few chapters, but couldn't sign it out, because I'd forgotten my library card) I agree with you guys about the age issue. Not because of her relationship with Erik, because I think that makes sense. It proves that they really didn't belong together, and we can use it in debates about the E/C vs R/C issue. But I think it makes her realtionship with Raoul more credible too. He definitely seemed older in ALW which didn't make sense to me. If they were Childhood sweethearts, you would think they'd be about the same age because children tend to bond with their own age group. If Chrsitine was 16 and Raoul was in his early twenties, that leaves about a 5 year difference. She looked about 7 when she went to the Opera house (in the movie that is, I know it;s different in other versions). That would have made him about 12, and I don't think a 12 year old would have much in common with a 7 year old. Those are just some speculations I've had. I'll probably make more sense after actually reading the book.

However, in the movie, the age cap between Christine and Raoul, while still extremely awkward, makes MUCH more sense than someone who is only about 16 and someone who is like thirty-something (but it makes it worse because in Leroux, Erik is in his 50's! ) So, the age gap in the movie never really bugged me. In fact, Jaycee, now that you mention it, in a manga I read the main character was in love with someone who was just about the same age gap as R & C in the movie. Except the character was 12 and the one she loved was 15 or 16... *shrugs* ^.^;; Meh...or maybe the age gap between R & C didn't bug me just because they are so cute together! ^_^

Well, I thought it made sense in the actual movie, it was the childhood sweethearts part, that I didn't think was credible.
Edit: Finally read Leroux! Party! ;D I thought that the R/C relationship was very well portrayed in this version. I was a little worried, because I had heard that Raoul criesand faints too much (he doesn't actually cry all that much and I don't remember any fainting) and that Christine was a total b*tch. She wa sa little mean to Raoul for a good part of the book, but I could sort of understand why she was like that. She was scared of Erik and once she was ready to admit that, she sort of warmed-up to Raoul. Anyway. I really liked this version of Chrtistine
