Patrick isn't exactly my favorite Raoul...but I love him none the less, I think he was pretty passionate in that movie.

I agree with you Raoulsgal. I saw the movie, and totally fell in love with Raoul. The movie is actually the only version I've finished. I read part of the book but never got to finish it.

Patrick is the only actor I've seen portray Raoul, except for a few very short clips of Steve Barton, and I like them both for different reasons. I think that Patrick was a very caring and loving Raoul who would go to the ends of the earth for his girl while Steve was more of a dashing, sweep-you-off-your-feet kinda guy ... who would still go to the ends of the earth for his girl IMO, Patrick has the best voice out of the movie 'trio', as well ... although his American accent bugs me at times. My friend very much likes to yell out "Of course not!" like he does in 'Notes' at inopportune moments ... Anyway, if a guy sang AIAOY to me like that, I'd melt Like Jaycee, I'm only partway through the book ::coughfirstthreepagescough::, so I can't compare to Leroux!Raoul.

YES. This is MY kinda thread!! Though... I will take advantage of my admin powers and just kindly remind all of you that creating such general threads isn't quite preferable. I have no worries about bandwidth just yet so feel free to post about whatever small aspect you like!
But omg. Have you seen the screencaptures from Hard Candy? HOLYHOTNESS. And that's coming from someone who despises poor grammar fandom.
Though the film, as my only completed version as well, was really what hooked me in. I felt like such a strange phan when I stumbled across POTO.com because I felt no pity whatsoever for the Phantom. All compassion was strongly flowing towards Patrick!Raoul, and I think that a great deal of that is left with Patrick to blame. I would cry my eyes out simply thinking of the final lair scene when he's all tied up and helpless.
AIAOY makes me melt every time. I have this thing for caressing, particularly when it's just the male's thumb stroking back and forth gently. I suppose I haven't had my full-fledged "sexual awakening" yet, because though PONR is undoubtedly passionate, I felt nothing. There was no love, just pure lust, and that is not what I look for. But back ontopic, Patrick has affection down pat. The way he cups her jaw just before he kisses her (which, HOLYCRAP amazing kisser!!), the way he strokes her hand as she brings his to her shoulder... mmm.

Wow...where can I begin to describe my eternal adoration for this Raoul? Leroux!Raoul was so sweet, and Barton!Raoul has an amazing voice, but Wilson!Raoul was awesome. I adore everything....his voice, his acting, and did I mention his great voice? Patrick Wilson, IMHO, rocks out loud. P.S: Did I say how much I like his voice ?

Yay! You guys actually like his voice! I love is, but my EC friends all think it sucks! My best friend thinks it sounds "reedy" whatever that's supposed to mean! Whenever he was singing, I basically sat in front of the screen without blinking until the song was over.
And, Em, I pretty much agree wtih everything you said...

It's funny how liking or disliking a character can influence one's opinion on their voice, eh? But in all seriousness, I love Patrick's voice. As for it sounding "reedy", Jaycee, I suppose your friends are comparing it to Gerry's, which is a completely different type of voice. I'd say that Patrick is a lyric tenor - a smooth, higher male voice (perfect for Raoul, IMO ) and Gerry is a baritone with a more rock and roll edge, probably from singing with a band previously. If I had to classify it by a fach, I'd probably say a dramatic baritone ... although Gerry is definitely not an opera singer (none of them are, actually ) Apparently, that's what ALW wanted for the Phantom's voice in the movie, despite many stage phantoms are also lyric tenors or sometimes lyric baritones. I think that Patrick's voice is much better trained and polished, probably from working on Broadway, which is one of the (many!) reasons I prefer it to Gerry's. But I can understand people preferring Gerry's, especially if they are not used to musical theatre and prefer more modern music styles. But I still stand strong in saying that Patrick is, technically speaking, the strongest singer of the three. ::waves 'Go Patrick!' banner::

really? Gerry was in a rock band? heehee, for some reason, I can't picture that. Of course I've never even seen a picture of him without the mask, so maybe that's why it's hard for me to imagine him as anything other than the Phantom!

Yep! While he was at law school, Gerry was the lead singer in Speed, a Scottish rock band ;D But then, of course, a little thing called acting came along ...

Ah, let's keep 'er about Patrick, mmkay?
But wow, I used to melt simply at the very sound of his voice. Perfect vibrato, smooth, GORGEOUS tone... I would listen to it on my computer and just turn to mush. Perhaps it's part of the reason I fell so madly in love with Raoul?
Which reminds me, I saw his clone on Canada Day, July 1st. I was boarding a bus downtown and I spotted his exact replica! I was soooo tempted to go right up to him and ask for his number... *cough*

Right-o, Em Back to the lovely, lovely Patrick and his lovely, lovely voice. Such a shame he didn't get any songs of his own ... Funny story about the look-alike, as I've got one of my own. I was watching the grand final of this major drama/musical theatre competition (which was totally awesome, by the way), the MC comes out and my jaw hits the ground. I swear, he looked like Patrick!Raoul's twin. He even had the POTO hair! It was rather distracting the whole way through, but then the juges were really slow making their decision and he was trying to kill time and starting singing Gloria Gaynor. That snapped me out of my Patrick fantasy pretty darn quick. His voice was ... not good

You guys are lucky! I've never met anyone who looked like Patrick! *Sigh*. I'll have to be content with watching the movie and listening to the music over and over. I've had to stop listening to AIAOY in public because I get this dreamy look on my face and people start thinking I'm wierd. Heh, they're probably not too far off on that one.

Ah ... AIAOY ... Patrick's lovely voice ... ::dies:: It's my favourite song on the movie soundtrack. Oh, I wish he had a solo song ::grumble::

Too bad this site didn't exist before the movie came out. We could have had a big protest against Raoul not having a solo in the movie!

I keep trying to think of places where he could have had his own song (if ALW had been smart enough to realise that, contrary to popular belief, Raoul has fangirls, too). The problem is, every idea I come up with just sounds like a repeat of the gist of AIAOY ... grrr.

Yeah, ALW should have thought of us before he wrotre the musical. We exist too! Just because we're outnumbered about 500 to 1 by the EC fangirls doesn't mean we sould be ignored *does big long speech about mistreated RCs and then goes off and pouts*

Agreed. This Raoul practically needed a solo as a giver of life. Though, if he did have one, my POTO movie soundtrack would get sick of me constantly playing it .

You don't say. Poor, underappreciated Raoul!
I swear, the characters I like never seem to get solos. It's not fair. (I also happen to be a Cosette fan ... grrr.)
On a more on-topic note, now that Raoul's lack of solo has its own thread, I'd like to share a quote I found in an old Reader's Digest.
'The role of Raoul went to "the extensively, permanently, annoyingly perfect Patrick Wilson," as Lloyd Webber calls him. At the time, Wilson was a rising Broadway star with a modest film career. But his sword-fighting skills and riding experience, not to mention his flawless voice, wowed the filmmakers.'

I really like Wilson's Raoul, but duh there could be better. I mean, in the movie, for how bad the other actors were cast, clearly dear Patrick stands out, surpassing the other two protagonists. But could have there been better? Absolutely. Was he good? Totally. He's just not my fav out there.

You know, I read somewhere that he was reluctant to take the part at first. I found that interesting because if a less talented actor had taken the part, and portrayed his chracter wrong, or even just differently, I probably wouldn't have fallen in love with POTO in the first place. I wonder if he's been to POTO.com and that's why he was reluctant...although most of the bashers there are criticising the long hair which was only in the 2004 movie anyway...

The long hair ... I'm still confused about that. I mean, it wasn't in fashion for men to have long hair in that period of time (although we all know that Joel was so concerned about historical accuracy ). Then again, Raoul was an aristocrat, so he could probably do whatever he darn well pleased.

Then again, Raoul was an aristocrat, so he could probably do whatever he darn well pleased. Well, even if it wasn't in fashion, they made it look like it was. If you look in the scene where Raoul's trying to get htrough the crowd to Christine's dressing room, he's not the only one with long hair. Besides, if he didn't have the hair I would be sad...
