Right. Has anybody else seen this one?
I was at a sleepover with two other phriends, one of whom owns about 350 DVDs. One of these is Italian horror director Dario Argento's take on Phantom of the Opera. We looked at the synopsis and couldn't resist checking it out - I mean, wouldn't you?
I kid you not.
We watched about twenty minutes before turning it off. I had heard a bit about it before, and knew it would be completely weird, but this was just ... odd. Funny at first, but ... odd. With a bit too much blood for my liking at one in the morning.
Anyway, has anyone actually sat through this entire movie? (We just fast-forwarded to the chandelier crash, saw more blood spurt, then watched Flubber.) I didn't see Raoul at all, and apparently Christine has some rather ... sensual ... scenes with the Phantom. Does anyone know if there is any RC in this thing at all?

Hmm....i've never even heard of this version and, while the 2004 movie version is actually the only movie version i've seen (well actually the only version i've seen/read until august) I have heard of most of the movie versions...although i did hear about a horror version once... do you know if it's the one where poor Raoul dies horrible gory gruesome death?

As far as I know, there are two especially gory movies based on POTO -- the slasher version with Robert Englund (1989, I think, off the top of my head), and the Argento version with Julian Sands as the Phantom (1998). I've never seen the Englund one, and quite frankly, have no desire to (mostly because I heard that the Phantom stiches dead skin to his face instead of a mask), and have no idea how any other characters are portrayed.
As for Argento, I only know a litte. Like I said, I didn't watch much. I'm not really one for blood-and-guts at the best of times, and when I saw some poor stagehand get hacked in half and the ratcatcher get his hand skewered and then his thumb eaten down to the bone before I'd managed to discern any real plot, I didn't feel the need to watch much more. What I've picked up from other forums is that this is a real EC movie. Erik is mentally disfigured rather than physically (and has Legolas hair), and he and Christine have a couple of fairly graphic sex scenes (which is actually rather disturbing, given that Christine is played by Asia Argento, the director's DAUGHTER). Apparently, Raoul is rather evil in this one, so I'm not sure how the RC relationship works, if it does at all. I know that Erik dies at the end, although I don't know about Raoul. The impression I got from others was that this movie is alright for a laugh at the sheer ridiculousness of the characterisation, if you can stomach the gore.
So I don't really feel the need to watch any more of it. I was just curious if anyone knew about the RC aspect ... if it exists ::facepalm::

Raoul DIES in that version, and it's supposedly very gory and horrible. poor misunderstood Raoul.

::sulks about general misunderstanding::
Well, that's another reason for me not to watch ... although I do think that, as a phan, one should be open to different interpretations ... but that doesn't mean I want to watch Englund ... and I think I should stop debating with myself now.
As for the gore level ... I'm the weirdest person when it comes to that. If I'm watching a movie, and I think something gory is going to happen I get really freaked out, cover my eyes, squeal like a girl, etc, etc, but always end up peeking out of curiosity and going, "Oh. That's not that bad." while my friends are wincing and grimacing. Then, half an hour later, I'll remember said gore and totally freak out again. I confuse myself.

Well, I''m not too bad when it comes to gore. I hate horro movies, but I can watch LOTR and a lot of my friends can't. But if the gore includes Raoul, forget it. I refuse to watch it. I love him too much to watch him die.
