I know that we all have our own special coveted roles in the theatre world, whether it be in musicals or in plays ... what are yours?
For me, let's start with the obvious.
Musicals:
Christine (The Phantom of the Opera) -- She has great music to sing, and I'd love to try and interpret the character my own way. I think there's a lot more to her than the simple ingenue she's often seen as.
Cosette & Fantine (Les Misérables) -- Admittedly, I'd prefer to play Fantine for the gut-wrenching reality of her story, but I could never sing the role and do it justice. It's to do with the belting -- I can get up to B-flat, and usually a halfway decent B, and even a staccato C, but a sustained belted C? No way. But I would still love to play Cosette, which is a role that is within a pretty good range for me. It would also be a great acting challenge, because Cosette has very little material to work with in order to gain the audience's sympathy. That's a tough call, especially when you compare it to all the time Eponine has to angst. Again, Cosette is so much more than a stupid ingenue!
Anything (Sweeney Todd) -- Look, I don't care how you do this, but get me in that show! I love the three female leads and they are all wonderful roles -- and I can sing all three. Mrs Lovett is amazing because there are so many ways to interpret the character, from grandmotherly to macabre, and she just steals the show. The Beggar Woman is great because of her swinging from lunacy to sanity and back again and the whole tragedy of her character. Johanna is awesome because she's the darker ingenue -- and 'Kiss Me' is such a good song
Emma & Lucy (Jekyll & Hyde) -- It's the same deal as with Cosette and Fantine. I'd prefer to play Lucy, but there is no freaking way I'd ever be able to. She belts crazy high. I'd love to experiment with portraying her relationship with Hyde, though. Anyway, I do love Emma as well. I think her story is just as tragic as Lucy's and she's a strong character. And I really love her parts in 'Your Work and Nothing More' and 'Take Me As I Am'. Besides, it's a part with pretty much the perfect tessitura for me
Nancy (Oliver!) -- Another 'in my dreams' one. I wish I could belt! She was actually the first role I ever coveted ... at age seven! What a conflict she has, though.
Plays:
Ophelia (Hamlet) -- Mostly for the mad scenes ... I love insane characters. And the relationships she has with Hamlet, Polonius and Laertes would be interesting to experiment with.
Abigail (The Crucible) -- This is a real 'villains are so much more fun to play than heroines' role. She's just so twisted and manipulative -- it'd be fun to try and get into her head. When we studied this play in English last year, I got to read her part. I was --> ;D ;D ;D
Alcyone & Myrrha (Metamorphoses) -- Okay, I do love my roles in Metamorphoses now, but I would have so loved these ones as well. They're more my style -- my roles now are more comic characters, but I love playing the dramatic and tragic roles. Alcyone is wonderful for being heart-breaking and Myrrha, despite the rather large ew-factor, gets to be tormented. Come on, it would be so cool.
Helena (A Midsummer Night's Dream) -- Just forget what I said about preferring dramatic roles to comic ones, okay? I love Helena, and she would be so much more fun than Hermia.
Those are really the ones off the top of my head ... of course I have a backlog of 'wouldn't it be cool?' roles, but these are my main ones at this point
