Now, I don't know about you guys, but whenever I'm involved in a performance of any kind, I can't wait to tell everyone and anyone about it. So here's a thread for all of us to discuss whatever performing arts project you happen to be working on, be it a musical, play, concert, recital, competition, whatever -- let's hear about it!
Let me start the ball rolling.
We've just started rehearsals for our school production of the Mary Zimmerman play, Metamorphoses, and I am uber-hyped. It's a really great play based on a bunch of Greek myths but with a contemporary slant. This means that everybody is going crazy with all these awesomely creative design ideas mixing classical and modern images ... I can already tell it's going to look incredible. Sadly, we don't have the resources to perform it around a pool of water, like they did in the Broadway production, so we're planning to experiment with mirrored rostra instead.
As for my part in this, I've been cast as Midas (the king who turns everything he touches into solid gold), a singer (there are musical transitions between several scenes) and Pomona (a wood nymph whose life aim seems to be to skip, smell flowers and grasp the wrong end of the stick every single time). Because there are so many roles in this play (upwards of forty or fifty) we've all been allocated several parts. However, the casting is still a little tentative, as one girl was accidentally given parts with hardly any speaking and, as we're being assessed on this production, she has to have more lines so she can show the marker that she's capable of speaking well.
Anyway, we're all very excited, and our director is the most awesome guy ever ... I can't wait to perform it ... except we only get to do two shows And that's not until November ... so I guess I'm just going to enjoy the rehearsals on an unhealthy level
FURTHER NEWS: Okay, today is officially a very good day for me. Firstly, I got cast in the ensemble for a community production of Sweet Charity! I am going to be so sick of this show by the end of the year ... But at least this time I'm onstage! Rehearsals start in a couple of weeks -- so excited!
Also, a couple of weeks ago, I entered a music theatre competition, not really expecting much, as I was right at the bottom of the age group and the standard is generally quite high. Anyway, on the night, I didn't get through, but there was a lot of controversy over the person who did (a lot of people thought that they chose the best vocalist instead of the best all-round music theatre performer), as well as being narky that only one person from our heat got through (usually at the very least, two do). So, they picked two wildcards and ... one of them was me! ;D
Finally, Metamorphoses is shaping up to be really good. I've got one complete costume (Pomona -- this long, floaty, floral dress) and half of another (Midas --a tails coat and pants, but nothing else). We've got about two scenes left to block, as well as the transitions ... and the end of the Orpheus and Eurydice scene. This is mainly thanks to our Eurydice, who basically shows up to rehearsals whenever she d**n well pleases and wasn't even aware she was cast in the role until our director told her off for not coming to the first blocking session ... I'm not particularly fond of her. On a happy note, I do love the other people in the cast, and there are some people who are just 'wow' in their roles. Our Cinyras is especially amazing.
